Up Division

During World War I, the Croix de Guerre was awarded for bravery to military personnel mentioned in dispatches. Recipients of the Légion d'Honneur and Médaille Militaire were automatically entitled to the Croix de Guerre. For subsequent acts of bravery, the recipient was awarded a palm leaf for Army citations, a gold star for Corps citations, a silver star for Division citations or a bronze star for Brigade and Regimental citations

I. The division Commander takes pleasure in announcing that the 38 Infantry Division (French) has seen fit in orders the names of certain members of the 88th Division and has presented to the members the Croix de Guerre.

    1. The extract of the 38th Division orders awarding the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star          follows:

 

Lieutenant Lowell Forbes, 350th Infantry.

"Energetic and courageous officer, charged with carrying out, with his platoon, a very delicate mission on October 14th, 1918, acquitted himself of such mission perfectly, and, incidentally, took two prisoners."

Corporal Richard Franta, 350th Infantry.

"A very brave corporal. While in charge of an advance post in a village which his section bad just occupied, did maintain his position under very difficult circumstances, due to his calmness and presence of mind in the face of the enemy.

Private Ernest Nierman, 350th Infantry.

"During a hostile raid attempted during the night of 12—13 October, he did valiantly defend a bayou through which the enemy endeavored to penetrate into our lines.

Sergeant Bardick Poliett, 350th Infantry.

"An excellent non-commissioned officer. During the night of 12—13 October, when the enemy attempted a raid on our line, he gave proof of the greatest activity and absolute scorn of danger, going from one post to another to organize the defense, under an extremely violent bombardment."

Sergeant Arthur Cade, 350th Infantry.

"An excellent non-commissioned officer. During the night of 12—13 October, when the enemy attempted a raid on our line, he gave proof of the greatest activity and of absolute scorn of danger, going from one post to another to organize the defense, under an extremely violent bombardment."

Lieutenant Oscar Nelson, 350th Infantry

"He excited comment by his spirit, during a daring reconnaissance made in enemy lines the night of 11-12 October, 1918. Being in reserve the 12th, Oct. at the moment the enemy was attempting a raid on our lines, he voluntarily went to the position of the attacked company and there gave proof of the greatest activity and of an absolute scorn of danger."

2. Citation by order of the French Brigade of the Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star follows:

Privale Emanuel Hauff. 350th Infantry.

"An automatic rifleman of great courage. Seeing a German non-commissioned officer, Private Hauff shot at his feet without wounding him, in order to allow the capture of the enemy. This action permitted the non-commissioned officer to he taken prisoner immediately."
