Comments: My neighbor wants to buy the pictures I have listed below, I think mostly for the trains that are in them. He wants to make copies and sell them. It seems to me someone who's heart is in Military History would value them more and a greater number of people would be able to enjoy them. His interest has prompted me to see if anyone else might want them. There might be one or two more....I'm not sure, it's been a long time. I have a picture of his company, and he sitting in the front row almost in the middle. I had it framed just a year ago as the edges were getting torn. I presume the picture was taken before they went to France, I am not sure. I am interested in which ship he sailed to France in, it could have been the Delta, Messanabia or Kashmir. He was a private first class, came from Lake County, SD. I do not know which year he was drafted, but hope to find that out soon. Any information you can help me with, will be appreciated. He occasionally spoke of his experiences in the War to End All Wars. He served in the Center Sector Haute Alsace 10/14-11/04, 1918. He was in the machine gun company and always included tales of shooting at the Red Baron whenever he talked. My understanding is that he contracted pnuemonia, you mention in the history of the regiment, and spent time recuperating before returning to the US. Fantastic job! Thanks for your efforts. I assume the soldier's surname was Harbaugh. The 4" x 10" photos are all dated 1919. They all seem to show Companys and Detachments of the "338th. Machine Gun Battalion." A 1917 graduate in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, he served as a medic in the 349th infantry of the 88th Division, entering service at Camp Dodge. I don't know much about his service in Europe, except that he helped care for both wounded troops and victims of the flu pandemic. Luckily, he himself escaped the flu as he cared for many who did not. His medical unit was commanded by a Captain Morrison, a doctor from Fort Dodge, Iowa. As a small boy, I met Dr. Morrison once, in the 1940's. One soldier, a man named Potter, died while in Dad's care in France. Later when Dad had moved to Chamberlain SD, he met the train carrying Potter's body for reburial in the local cemetery. There wasn't space for Dad to come home from France immediately after the War, so he was sent to Toulouse, and attended the Unversity there for several months. I would appreciate being pointed in the direction of more specific informatio

An interesting event happened when just before the birth of my first daughter. Grandpa had been dead about 5 years but I called out to him repeatedly during my labor. I wanted him to be proud of me!

Comments:I like your site, I am researching my grandfather who was in 91st Infantry Div "wild west" ww1 and just happened upon your web site. I realized now after researching ww1 why my grandfather only lived to 46 after the war...he survived the war but died back home. My grandmother and he divorced because of his drinking, well now I really know why, just staying alive over there was challenge enough and then I'm sure having to deal with all of the memories of the terrible things happening. I will keep looking for more information to try and see and learn about a grandfather I never knew. Thanks again for your site.

Its the only thing I have to remember him by, other than his many acts of kindness which I will never forget. If anybody has any pictures of him I'd sure be thankful for any and all I could download or copy. Veno was about 6'6" tall and stood well above most others. He was known to wear a white straw hat on occasion and the only picture I saw of him in France he had it on and stood about a foot taller than the other gentlemant he was with.

Comments: Great site! We have simular intrests. Mine is centered on Coast Artillery Units and the Ordnance Repair Shops at Mehune-ser-Yevre France. My grandfather was at Camp Dodge and I have a large Camp Dodge page on my site. I was inquiring about a link between our sites. Please take some time and review my site and see if you feel it would be a good match. I also would provide to you a link from my links page. Thanks.

I have been looking up information and it is just so interesting and your history is just great. Dad never talked much about the War so we have had to do a lot guessing. Thanks so much for all you have done on this site. And will continue to return especially for the listings by name when you finish the rosters. Many thanks.
